Nitrous Oxide
What is Nitrous Oxide? Nitrous is a gas called N20, it has 2 nitrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. Instead of a supercharger or turbocharger for more air and fuel into the engine, you can use Nitrous. You cannot just inject straight oxygen into the cylinder, the combustions would be hot as a torch and uncontrollable. The Nitrogen in Nitrous actually cools the combustion temperatures down 60 to 70 degrees. So you get a cooler charge with Nitrogen, and more power with the oxygen, gives you a more controlled burn. Nitrous does not give you the power. Fuel gives you the power, Nitrous just lets you inject more fuel into the cylinder to make more power.
Is It Harmful To My Engine?
It depends on how much you inject into your engine and what your engine is built for. There are safe kits on the market that will give you plenty of extra horsepower without blowing up your engine. If your going to give your engine more than 50 HP shots, then you may have issues. You may need stronger rods, steel crank, forged pistons, then again with a small stock kit you can have endless amounts of power without building up anything. Below are pictures out of my 800cc Ski Doo Summit snowmobile showing a burn pattern after a 2 lb. bottle nitrous run. Notice the lack of any carbon! This is a 2 stroke engine. The nitrous has a cooling effect on the burn in the combustion chamber. If you feel the top of that piston it leaves a gritty sandpaper kind of feel to it. This is why you should use coated pistons. Notice the good burn pattern on the top, not near the edge of the pistons, all concentrated on the top of the dome. I ran 20 lbs. of nitrous last season on these pistons and they are stock. running a 30 HP kit, 16 HP per cylinder.

There are different types of nitrous kits available. Injected kits are more
expensive to install than base kits. below are some descriptions of
different nitrous kits available. Its up to you, the customer to decide with
which one you want to go with. Give us a call, 559-642-6936

Here
are some pictures of my 05 Ski Doo 800 Summit direct port Nitrous injected
Snowmobile . The Nitrous jet is under the blue cap, gas under the red. If I
want to change my jetting I just unscrew them and change them, that's it!
Right now I believe I am running a .026 Gas Jet and a .022 Nitrous jet. That
is supposed to be 16 horsepower per cylinder kit. 30 HP total (2 cylinder)
Above is My bottle in the rear seat, picture to the right shows the bottle heater with thermostat.

Above is the Nitrous Jets in the intake boot. Gas on the red cap, Nitrous on the blue, picture on the right is the fuel pump.
And Finally the control panel
Toggle switch on the left is for the bottle heater. Toggle switch on the right is to arm the Nitrous system. The large led lights were added so I could tell when it is on or off and not included with kits. Kit comes with a micro switch on the carburetor but I armed mine with a button on the handle bars.
